China Beihai City:
Beihai

Resident People:
1,350,000

General Information:
Beihai City is located at the southern end of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and on the northeastern bank of the Beibu Gulf. It is one of the 14 coastal port cities further opened to the outside world. As early as 2000 years ago, Beihai was active in China's foreign economy and port trade.
Beihai has a good geographical surrounding. Backed by the great southwest region of China, it faces the Southeast Asia, with Guangdong Province, Hainan Island, Hong Kong, Macao, and Vietnam close by.
Beihai is one of the nearest ports from China mainland to the port cites in Southeast Asia, West Asia, Africa, and Europe and thus is the most convenient gateway to sea for China's southwest region and part of the areas in southern and central China.
Beihai is rich in natural resources such as seaports, fresh water, land, tourism, marine products, minerals, oil and natural gas, especially in those of comprehensive subtropical resources.
Beihai has a very advantageous environment for investment. In recent years, the city has focused construction on railway, seaport, airport, highway, power supply, water supply, communication, system of drains and other infrastructure. At present, its highways radiate in all directions. The port's handling capacity has been further promoted, and airport extension is proceeding smoothly. The city of Beihai has basically formed a system of three-dimensional communications by land, air, and sea, and thus become a major gateway to the sea for Southwest China and some parts of South China.

Geography:
The province of Guangxi in Southern China is bordered by Guangdong, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan and Vietnam. In the south of this fascinating province on a small peninsula overlooking the blue water of the Gulf of Tonkin (Beibu Gulf) nestles the charming city of Beihai.
Comprising of three districts and one county, Beihai covers an area of 3,337 square kilometres with a greater population of 1.35 million and urban population of 430,000. In 1984, Beihai was designated as one of China's fourteen coastal cities opened to the outside world.

This city of flowers and tree lined boulevards holds the honour of being China's No.1 resort area. Here in Beihai we welcome our visitors to take pleasure in the unspoiled white sands of Silver Beach under clear, sunny tropical skies and fresh sea breezes. This famous beach is 24km long with a host of small hotels, shops and restaurants. Changing amenities are available for swimmers and beach umbrellas for sun bathers.

Beihai's history as a fishing and trading port dated back to the late Qin (221BC--206BC) and early Han Dynasties (206BC--220AD). It was one of the starting points of the "Marine Silk Route" in Tang Dynasty (618AD--907AD). Established in 1374 in the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty (1368--1644), an ancient settlement called Bailong (White Dragon) Pearl Town flourished on the coast near Hepu county. Pearl divers forced to dive with stone weights around their waists, tied to ropes, harvesting the sea beds of precious natural pearls for Emperor Hong Wu. Many divers perished in the dangerous shark infested waters.

Beihai means north of the sea and it is thought the name Beihai was established by the placing of the a town maker on this site in 1662, early Qing Dynasty. In 1796 Beihai became a city. In 1876 Beihai was designated as one of the open trading ports along with Yichang, Wenzhou and Wuhan by the Sino-British Yantai Treaty. Before long, British, French, German, Danish, Portuguese, Norwegians, Dutch, American and Japanese came and established consulates, custom houses, banks, churches, hospitals, schools,,firms and shipyards. Many of these buildings can still be seen today and a walk along Old Street (Zhuhai Road) will delight our visitors.
