Dandong Tourism:
Now it's time to go traveling! Today we'll take you on a tour of the country's largest border city, Dandong, in northeast China's Liaoning province.
Lying at the southeastern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in northeast China, Dandong is the only border city in Liaoning province, facing Sinuiju city in North Korea across the Yalu River. As it's located right at the confluence of the Yalu River and the Yellow Sea, the city is subject to continental monsoons and has a mild and pleasant maritime climate with abundant rainfall and sunshine. Due to its geographical location along the border, with the river and the seaside, trade, tourism, light industry and port-related sectors form the mainstay of the local economy.

Dandong boasts a large number of fascinating tourist attractions, indeed 14 are listed as state and provincial level scenic sites. Its magnificent landscape, unique border sights, pleasant climate and convenient transport have combined to make the city a popular tourist destination attracting numerous visitors from home and abroad.

Liu Xiaojun, deputy director of the Dandong Tourism Bureau, speaks of the city's booming tourist industry.

"Over the past few years, we have given priority to the development of the tourism industry to secure the city a permanent position on the tourist map. We've opened a number of specially designed tour routes by tapping the potential of the local tourist resources, including the one-to-six-day cross-border tours to North Korea. Now tourism has become a pillar industry of the local economy. Last year we had 3.5 million travelers, with the income from tourism accounting for some 11 percent of the city's GDP."

As a border city between China and North Korea, Dandong holds a special charm to visitors because of its cross border tours. The Yalu River - the boundary river between the two countries ¨C is Dandong's biggest attraction, and a must see on every visitor's itinerary.

¡¡From its source in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province, the river runs southwestwards for some 800 kilometers along the border of China and North Korea, finally flowing into the Yellow Sea. It winds its way through 200 kilometers in Dandong and has been designated as a state-level scenic site. Pleasure boat cruises are an ideal way to fully appreciate the beauty of the river and its surroundings.

Along the river banks are scattered many historical sites and relics. One of the most famous and worth visiting is a part of the Great Wall on Tiger Mountain, which overlooks the Yalu River about15 kilometers northeast of downtown Dandong. This part of the Great Wall is of particular interest to historians and visitors because it's the eastern starting point of the dragon-like Great Wall rebuilt centuries ago during the Ming Dynasty. On the mountain top there is a beacon tower, erected to guard against intruding armies. This tower gives a panoramic view across Yalu River and along the Sino-Korean border.

Every day the Yalu river is host to many visitors from across the country. Mr Liang from Heilongjiang province is one of them.

"A trip to Dandong is not complete without a tour of the Yalu River. The scenery here is simply gorgeous! I have taken lots of photos and I'm going to tell all my friends to come here to visit. It's such a thrilling experience."

Well, after a pleasant trip along the Yalu River, we head for Phoenix Mountain, about 50 kilometers northwest of downtown Dandong. Over 800 meters above sea level, it's one of the four best known scenic mountains in Liaoning province.

Perilous peaks, deep valleys and caves, grotesquely-shaped rocks, limpid springs and ancient Taoist temples form the major attractions of the sacred mountain, which has served as a holy Taoist shrine for centuries. Along the mountain paths you can come across a large number of inscribed stone tablets left behind by ancient nobles, literati, and artists. The mountain is also a natural botanic garden for over 800 kinds of rare plants and medicinal herbs.

A hike onto the mountain will be a challenging but valued experience, with the reward of many fantastic views during the climb. Lazybones meanwhile can be brought straight to the top of the General Peak in a cable car, from where they can look down across the scenery.

¡¡The best time to visit the mountain is between April and October. A temple fair is held here every year in the fourth month of the lunar calendar, when visitors can enjoy all kinds of folk art performances and local delicacies. For accommodation you can stay in the Phoenix Villa at the foot of the mountain, and enjoy the unique Manchu cuisine.

Now we come to another famous scenic area in Dandong. Qingshangou, literally meaning green mountain gully, is located in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County. It's a fairyland with stunningly beautiful mountains, waters and luxuriant primeval vegetation. In 1984, it was listed by UNESCO as one of the world's six unpolluted natural sites.

The place is a wildlife paradise with 2000 varieties of plants and 90 types of animals, birds and fish. It's rich in many mountain products such as haws, chestnuts, walnuts and mushrooms. After feasting your eyes sightseeing, you can also treat your taste buds with a meal of delicious local specialties.

There are several hotels around the area which can suit any budget. But the best choice I think is to stay in the homes of the local villagers, who are mostly from the Manchu and Korean ethnic groups. Not only is this inexpensive, but it also gives you an opportunity to learn about the lifestyle and folk customs of the local residents.

Mrs. Zhang, a tourist from Jilin province, expressed her excitement after visiting almost all the noted attractions in the city.

"These places all look like beautiful water-color paintings. Wherever I go, I'm always so absorbed in their beauty that I'm reluctant to leave."

¡¡Dandong is the nation's most concentrated Manchu ethnic area. Manchus account for 30 percent of the city's total population. The city is also home to some 20 thousand Koreans. So the local cuisine is strongly influenced by Manchu and Korean food. For sea food gourmets, special aquatic dishes from the Yellow Sea, such as prawns, crab and yellow croakers, are widely available in most local restaurants, and are all reasonably priced.

Well, after treating ourselves with a lovely meal of local delicacies, time is up for today's tour of Dandong city in northeast China's Liaoning province. Thanks for coming along.
