New Asia Hotel, Shanghai was built in 1943. This 9-story mansion was the very first hotel in Shanghai that was funded, designed, built and managed by Chinese. It was completely refurbished in 2000, retaining its original look but improving its facilities and changing the interior decorations. The hotel is within easy walking distance of Shanghai's prime shopping area on Nanjing Road. The hotel was opened on1934, was redecorated on 2004

Within the hotel, there is a post office, a ticket reservation office, a billiards room, a sauna a dancing hall, karaoke and a gymnasium. The hotel business center can provide you with fax, typing, photocopying and access to various meeting rooms.

This hotel is based on the advanced international economy hotel, with a total of 343 rooms. The rooms all contain individually controlled air-conditioning, satellite TV, IDD telephones, and a private shower. Some of the rooms provide beautiful views of Shanghai such as the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Jinmao Building. This hotel is an excellent location and we liked the fact that it is an old establishment. The room was clean and the staff friendly. Sadly the beds were absolutely rock hard which spoiled this stay for us. Also the internet cable in our room was not working. We ate breakfast at 9.00 am and by this time most of the cooked food was very cold which is not to western taste, maybe better if you get there early!!

Good hotel and reasonably priced. Breakfast is okey, except some of the food is not replenished but replaced with other food items, which makes some of the tags all wrong. Reception needs more people to handle the ratio of guest. I had to wait a few times for more than 10mins to be able to be attended too. They should probably have a different desk for tourist to ask suggestions or get directions. Overall the stay was good and recommendable if your in Shanghai.

Overall rating would be 6 out of 10. The location is perfect because public transport and popular tourist/shopping sites are easily accessible and it is known to majority of cab drivers. The room however was slightly small and positioned next to the staff elevator so not as quiet as desire. I did not have breakfast at the hotel and it did not come free with the room so cannot rate that.

I highly recommend this hotel. The first room, 505, was a bit too small, but the 718 was excellent. It had also a great view of Pudong and the Oriental Pearl, so if one wanted to wake up early and take pictures of the skyline one could see the weather from the window. Very convenient. One of the best value for price hotels in Shanghai.

Business Center Lady very helpful. But 9th Floor Restaurant Chef very rude and suprised to see that charging money from customers (why a chef doing this?). Also I was asked for LEMON JUICE but said No Lemons available in the hotel. Very Strange. Overall very good hotel, specially when you book it through Internet.

We had a good stay in this hotel. At the reception the employees were friendly but the knowledge of the English language is too poor.
