Japanese lawmakers praise Expo progress

Zhong Yanqun, fulltime deputy director of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee, presents the Shanghai World Expo mascot Haibao to the Japanese officials.

Two Japanese lawmakers from Kanagawa Prefecture yesterday said the Shanghai World Expo 2010 would be one of the most successful Expos ever.

Suzuki Tsuneo and Sikida Hiroaki, members of the Kanagawa Legislature, met Zhong Yanqun, deputy director of the Expo Executive Committee.

Japan held the last World Expo in 2005 in Aichi.

Zhong gave a progress report on the Expo. He said the Osaka Expo in Japan in 1970 drew the largest number of visitors in World Expo history. The Shanghai event was likely to attract more than 70 million visitors from home and abroad, he said.

Zhong said he hoped many Japanese would visit the Shanghai Expo.

The Japanese lawmakers visited the Expo Exhibition Hall and viewed the site from atop the Expo Mansion.
