Digital music replaces CDs as a favorite among Chinese

18-Jul-2008 -
Beijing, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many Chinese people have turned away from CDs and now choose digital music like cyber music and Personalized Ring Back Tone instead, a survey report revealed on Thursday.

The survey on Internet music showed that about half of the respondents rarely bought CDs while about 70 percent turned to online search engines for music, Thursday's Beijing Youth Daily reported.

It also showed that only 33 percent of the surveyed would like to pay for MP3 music.

The newly concluded survey was jointly initiated in June this year by more than ten music websites, Internet radio stations and telecommunication companies.

Song Ke, CEO of Taihe Rye Music Co. Ltd., admitted the company's revenues from CDs have been declining in recent years.

"Many young people even don't know what a CD is," he was quoted as saying.

But Wang Di, a spokesman with Warner Music, was not so worried by the situation.

"Online music may prevail, but CD is the symbol of a true lover of music," he said.

The survey at least reflected a trend toward the craze of digital music and a fading CD Business, according to Liu Ping, head attorney of the Music Copyright Society (MCS).

The MCS is a body that acts on behalf of music composers and writers.

"The free music and illegal download empowered by search engines make it difficult to set up a royalty payment system," the newspaper cited Liu as saying.
