Sanya is an important political, economic, cultural and foreign trade port in the southern part of Hainan, China, and also a famous coastal tourist city filled with tropical landscapes and local customs. Since Sanya is situated in the southernmost part of China, she has been called "theremotest cape of the earth" since ancient time.

The region of Sanya has a long history of human development. There were discoveries of cultural relics of the Old Stone Age. Ancient Persian tombs were found along the coast.

Sanya region was called Ahuya Prefecture in the western Han dynasty, later changed to Linzhen Prefecture in the Sui Dynasty, Zhen Zhou in the Tang dynasty, Ya Zhou in the Song Dynasty, Ya County in 1920 and Sanya City in 1984.

Sanya City is a tropical international tourist city which is situated in the southernmost part of Hainan Island, borders on South China Sea in the south and adjoins Tongza in the north, Baoting and Linshui in the southeast and Ledong in the northwest. It was called Yaxian County in 1920 and named Sanya City in 1984. Nearby half a million people of a number of nationalities, including Han, Li, Miao and Hui live here in compact communities and nearly the half of the population belongs to national minorities.

Dadonghai Tourist Resort
The Dadonghai Tourist Resort is located at the down town area of Sanya City. The crescent shape beach is flat and the sea water there is clean. In winter, the water temperature is between 18-23 Celcius Degree. It is one of the best winter resorts and one of the best places for diving, swimming and sunbath. Luhuitou Park
The name of the park was originated from a legend of the Li Nationality. It is said that a young hunter of the Li nationality traced after an Eldi's deer from the Wuzhishan Mountain to the cliff where this park locates. The deer turned back its head and changed into a beautiful girl.

Yalong Bay National Resort
28 km from Sanya City, there situates the Yalong Bay which is in the shape of a crescent. The beach is about 7000 metres long. The water in the bay is so clean that the visibility there reaches 7.9 metres. Apart from the bright sunshine, the clean water, the fine sand and the flat beach, Jinmu Cape and Yalong Cape are excellent places for rock-climbing in the bay. The coral reef in the bay makes it one of the favorite places for diving. The End of the Earth
6 km to the down town area of Sanya City, locates the well-known beautiful scene spot, Tian Ya Hai Jiao (End of the Earth). On one of huge stones on the beach, there inscriped two Chinese words "Tian Ya" (means the edge of the sky), written by Chengzhe, chief magistrate of Yazhou Prefecture during the reign of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty. On another huge stone behind it, there is inscribed two other Chinese words "Hai Jiao" (means the utmost end of the sea). It is one of the most famous scene spots in China.

The Taoist Fairy Caves
This tourist attraction is composed of Small Fairy Cave, Turtle Mountain, and Yanzhou Gulf and is regarded as one of the wonders of South China. The matchless and awe-inspiring Zhu Yan Fairy Cave is full of strange cliffs and grotesque rock formations as if created by skillful artisans. Together they form a total of 81 fantastic rock scenes. These captivating structures are scattered along a long beach, creating a strange landscape. Yanzhou Gulf stretches out crescen-shaped along the blue waters of the South China Sea, with waves pounding the bases of its cliffs.

Nanshan Buddism & Cultural Tourism Zone
Nanshan is a very special place, blessed not only by its idyllic location, but also enjoying an honored position in the myths and folklore of Chinese culture. 40 km to the down town aera of Sanya City, there locates the Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone. It is not only the largest of the kind in Hainan, but also one of the largest cultural tourism zone in China. The park is divided into 3 theme parks. The South Sea Avalokitesvara (Guanyin - Goddess of Mercy)
The 108-meter-high statue of "South-Sea Guanyin", a "world-level" Buddhism project in Nanshan cultural Tourism District, began to be built on October 27, 1999, and will be completed in three years' time. Those who have denoted more than 100 Yuan to the foundation will have their names inscribed in a stele.
