Climate in China: brief Introduction
Considering the size of the Chinese territory, one can find many different climatic conditions at the same time. In fact, from the dry continental climate of the northwestern regions one passes to the hot, humid tropical climate of the south-central region of the country.
The best seasons for visiting China are the spring and fall. At this time the climate is mild throughout the country. In winter the mildest temperatures are in the south, while in summer the entire country is hot. Climate types
China has a marked continental monsoon climate. The Chinese territories are characterized by large variety of climates.
Most parts of China are in the northern temperate zone, parts of the northern area in the Frigid Zone, parts of the southern area are in the tropical or subtropical zone.
Most of China is located in the north temperature zone, typical for a warm climate and clear division between seasons. In winter, northern winds from high latitude areas make the northern parts cold and dry; during the summer, monsoons from eastern and southern coastal areas bring warmness and moisture.
The climate is different because the extensive territory and various topography from area to area. Other types of climate, like for example plateau climate, alpine climate, forest climate, desert climate and basin climate, coexist in China, in consequence of complicated topography and a large disparity in elevation.
North, South, Centre, Northwest
In the north of China, the summer is warm and brief, whereas the winter is cold and prolonged. In the south of China, the summer is extended, humid and hot, and the winter is brief and hot, the temperature rarely go below freezing. In the China of centre (the area along the Yangtze River), the summer is prolonged, hot and moist, during the winter, is short and cool. In northwest of China, such as Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, the summer is dry and sweltering while the winter is awesomely cold.
On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (about 4,000 meters above sea level) in southwest of China, the winter is very much cold and summer is short and mildly warm, with small precipitation and the temperature very different between day and night.
Precipitation
China has an average annual precipitation of 629 millimeters, which is in a way that is not equitable distributed by region and by season. Precipitation progressively declines from the area of southeast to the area of northwest. Most areas of southeastern coasts, are influenced by the oceanic warm and humid air current and have rich rainfall, which reaches over 1,500 millimeters, while in northwestern areas the annual precipitation move down to below 200 millimeters.
