AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINAAND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS CONCERNING THE MAINTENANCEBY THE REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS OF THE CONSULAR POST HEADED BY AN HONORARYCONSUL IN THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION OF THE PEOPLE'SREPUBLIC OF CHINA

The Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of
the Republic of Mauritius (hereinafter referred to as "the two Parties"),
out of the common desire to develop friendly relations and enhance
consular ties between the two countries, have reached the following
agreement concerning the maintenance by the Republic of Mauritius of the
consular post headed by an honorary consul in the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China:
1. The Government of the People's Republic of China agrees to the
maintenance by the Government of the Republic of Mauririus of the consular
post headed by an honorary consul in the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region of the People's Republic of China, with the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region as its consular district.
2. The number of the honorary consular officers (not including the
service staff) of the Republic of Mauritius in the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China shall be limited
to two. Any change as to the number of the honorary consular officers
shall be decided upon by the two Parties through separate consultations.
3. The Government of the People's Republic of China, in accordance
with its relevant laws and regulations, shall accord the necessary
assistance and facilities to the consular post headed by an honorary
consul of the Republic of Mauritius in the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and its honorary
consular officers in the exercise of consular functions.
4. The two Parties shall handle consular matters between them in a
friendly manner in the spirit of consultation and co-operation, and in
accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and
international practice.
5. The honorary consular officers shall be the nationals of either
Party or a third country, but not the stateless, and must be the permanent
residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's
Republic of China.
6. The Republic of Mauritius shall not appoint any honorary consular
officers, if it has appointed career consular officers to the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
7. The present Agreement shall enter into force on 1 July 1997.
Done in Beijing on April 14, 1997 in duplicate in the Chinese and
English languages, both texts being equally authentic.
