THE LETTER FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINATO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL (Tel-Aviv, 30 June 1997) Whole document Your Excellency, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's Note dated 29 June 1997, which reads as follows: "With a view to developing friendly relations between our two countries, promoting trade and economic development and facilitating entry procedures between the State of Israel and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, I have the honour to propose the following as an Agreement on mutual exemption of visa requirements between our two Governments: 1. Citizens of the State of Israel, who are holders of valid Israeli passports shall be exempted from visa requirements for entry into, exit from or transit through the territory of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

2. Citizens of the People's Republic of China, who are holders of valid passports of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China shall be exempted from visa requirements for entry into, exit from, or transit through the territory of the State of Israel.

3. a. The competent authorities of both sides shall exchange specimens of their valid passports through diplomatic channels before the Agreement enters into force.

b. The terms for the duration of the exemption shall be determined between the competent authorities of the two sides within three months from the entry into force of the Agreement.

4. This Agreement shall enter into force on 1 July 1997.

5. This Agreement shall remain in force for a period of two years. It shall be renewed automatically, unless one side gives notice in writing, through diplomatic channels, to the other side of its intention to terminate the Agreement three months before the expiration date.

If the above proposals are acceptable to the Government of the People's Republic of China, I have the honour to propose that the present Note and Your Excellency's reply constitute an Agreement between our two Governments concerning the mutual exemption of visa requirements, which shall enter into force on 1 July 1997." I have the honour, on behalf of the Government of the People's Republic of China, to confirm and agree to the above contents in your Note.

I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the assurances of my highest consideration.
