AirAsia targeting Southern China

9-Jul-2004 -
AirAsia's Thai arm, Thai AirAsia which became the first low-cost carrier (LCC) to land in Macau on Monday, is eyeing Southern China.

"For the month of July we are 80 percent full already on this flight, which is a tremendous start considering that we budgeted for a 55 percent load factor and only announced this route about a month ago," said Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia.

He added that the LCC was already planning to launch another BKK-Macau flight in September.

On August 23, AirAsia will also launch a direct flight from KL and add "one other destination" from Malaysia later this year.

Another flight will also be added by the end of the year from another destination in Thailand, bringing to five the number of AirAsia flights to Macau. A source close to the airline said the second destination out of Thailand was likely to be Phuket.

"Initial evidence," said Fernandes had shown that AirAsia had "made the right decision" in choosing Macau and proven critics wrong.

"There has been a great amount of interest from low-cost carriers in Southern China - Macau has certainly whetted our appetite," said Fernandes, confirming that the airline had also been approached to "launch flights out of Macau to other markets."

Two other destinations in Southern China are Chengdu and the island Hainan which are attracting AirAsia's interest. A source with connections to the airline said one of the two destinations could well be next on its list for direct flights out of Bangkok.
