Chinese Seek Coolness on Mountains or by Seas

13-Oct-2001 -
As the scorching hot season approaches, more and more Chinese people are seeking coolness on mountains or by the sea. Tourists are flocking to the seaside of Qingdao and Dalian and most hotels are fully booked on top of Mount Lushan and Mount Huangshan. Experts estimate that the number of tourists traveling to these places will boom in the next few months. Mount Huangshan in east China's Anhui province is on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage list of the United Nations Educational Scientific, and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO). The temperature on top of Mount Huangshan average no more than 20 degrees Celsius in summer). The local government hopes to attract more tourists to the mountain through such activities as traditional Chinese Yangge dance competitions. Mount Lushan in Jiangxi province, another Chinese mountain on the UNESCO list is historically significant. Recently the mountain was appraised as a Chinese geological park. "We started the reform of shifting from coal to electricity in May. When the condition of the environment is improved, more people will want to come here," said Wu Wenfeng, director of the Jiangxi provincial Tourism Bureau. China's northern seaside city Dalian has always paid attention to developing the tourism industry. "Since the beginning of summer, loads of people have come here every day. In Jinshitan holiday village, people can even play with dolphins," said Gao Yongwei, vice director of the Dalian Tourism Bureau. When summer comes, the seaside near Beidaihe will become crowded. According to the latest statistics from the Hebei provincial tourism bureau, the tourists number can reach 30,000 every day. "The trend to travel to mountains and the seaside will promote the development of the tourism industry," said Zhang Guangrui, professor of the Tourism Research Center at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He said that not only students but also many employees are choosing to take vacations in order to avoid the heat.
