Heritage Title Sought for Watchtowers
|
26-Sep-2003 - |
More than 20 historians and cultural experts from top Chinese universities recently attended a forum in Kaiping and Jiangmen cities, Guangdong Province, focusing their discussions on the diaolou found in Kaiping. The diaolou, or fortified watchtowers, first constructed in the early Qing dynasty (1644-1912) and reaching their peak in the 1920s and 1930s, are applying for the title of cultural site of world heritage. Since the 14th century, Kaiping has traditionally been a region of major emigration abroad, and a melting pot of ideas and trends brought back by successful overseas Chinese. This is also reflected in the plethora of influences seen in the architectural styles of the watchtowers, with an interesting feature where western details are produced with local bricks and materials. Experts pointed out that the unique culture of overseas Chinese was an important part of the cultural tradition of south China, whose openness, innovation and willingness to merge with global trends were derived from the overseas Chinese heritage. |
