The GuangZhou environment and hygiene bureau and planning bureau would build 13 more public toilets on and near Beijing Road, Wednesday's GuangZhou Daily reported.

In the recent holidays, people visiting Beijing Road complained about there being not enough toilets.

"During the holiday week, 800,000 people on average visited Beijing Road each day. If a person stayed for two to three hours, he or she had to go to the toilet once," said Deng Yiqing, vice director of environment and hygiene bureau.

Li Hongwei, vice director of the planning bureau said 13 public toilets, each 50 square meters, has been planned, taking the total number of toilets around Beijing Road to 17. The toilet behind GuangZhou department store would also be extended to two levels, said Li.

As women were more likely to go shopping, women's rooms would be enlarged, said Deng.

Deng said new toilet signboards would be put up at the main entrances and along Beijing Road.

There are now 1,408 fixed toilets and 114 portable toilets in the city. The environment and hygiene bureau is considering putting portable toilets at four busy sections -- Beijing Road, Shangxiajiu, Tianhe City, and Tianhe Sports Center -- during holidays.

The environment and hygiene bureau reiterated that all toilets in department stores, hotels and restaurants should be open to tourists free of charge.
