As the capital of Liaoning Province,
Shenyang has a total area of 12,980 square kilometres and a population of about 7.2 million.

Today equipment manufacturing sector is a pillar industry for the city.
Its manufacturing capability in machine tools, high-voltage electricity equipment, mining and metallurgical machinery, chemical engineering equipment, cement producing equipment, sewage treatment equipment and expressway construction machinery is the greatest in China.
Shenyang has a total of 44 varieties of equipment products, each holding a leading share of the Chinese market.

Shenyang has developed a healthy system for research and development.
At present,
Shenyang has a total of nine State-level science and technological research institutions, 14 State-level engineering technology centres, 33 higher education institutions, and about 410,000 engineers and technicians, making the city fourth in the nation in terms of comprehensive science and technology strength.
Shenyang also takes the lead in terms of using the state-of-the-art technology.
At present, a total of 20 enterprises in the city use high technologies to upgrade their manufacturing capabilities, with one third of the equipment digitalized.
The city has spared no efforts to develop a healthy environment for science and technology development and the introduction of domestic and foreign investment in recent years, helping upgrade its traditional economic structure.
