Shanghai Airways Raise Transport Capability

24-Jan-2002 -
Shanghai aviation departments have recently made adjustments to enhance the airport's transport capability to be better prepared for the large number of passengers during China's traditional Spring Festival period.

China Eastern Airlines Co., Ltd. will put 68 airplanes into the holiday transport. Shanghai Airlines will use all its 22 planes for the effort, together with Boeing's 737-800 planes, which will begin operating on January 21.

It is estimated that the two airways will be able to carry 454,000 passengers per week during the holiday period.

Tourist numbers during the Spring Festival will also increase with a rising number of visitors to HongKong and Macao.

At that time, Eastern Airlines will arrange 20 Shanghai-Hongkong flights daily. Shanghai Airlines will increase its flights to Macao from three to six per day from February 8 to 12.

The two companies are both to open new international air routes during the period.

Eastern Airlines will open new air lines to Singapore, Thailand and Australia, while Shanghai Airlines will add 147 flights, among which 42 are international air routes.

In its domestic air transport service, Eastern Airlines will add several new routes, namely Shanghai-Harbin, Shanghai-Nanning, Shanghai-Zhanjiang and Shanghai-Zhuhai, while Shanghai Airlines will mainly focus on flights to Harbin, Shenyang and Chongqing as well as Chengdu.

Statistics show that the number of airline passengers in Shanghai will reach about 1.1 million people this Spring Festival,13 percent higher than last year.

The warm weather this winter makes it likely there will be foggy or rainy days during the holidays, and the two companies are well prepared to cope with this.

Due to the fall in fuel prices, ticket prices will also decrease by an average of 60 to 80 yuan per ticket.
