Weather Alarm Service Launched for Vessels in Bohai Sea

A weather alarm system for vessels in the Bohai Sea off the east China coast has been launched by the Yantai Maritime Bureau in Shandong Province. According to the bureau, when the wind on the Bohai Sea is stronger than the VII grade, the bureau will offer alarms to vessels shipping in the area and suggest them to stop travel. Every winter, strong winds on the Bohai Sea cause shipwrecks near the port city Yantai. The bureau said the weather alarm system is adopted to ensure the safe shipping of vessels in the area in winter. The Yantai-Dalian waterway in the Bohai Sea sees about 23,000 vessels each year and is known for its frequent shipping accidents. On Nov. 24, 1999, 282 of the 304 passengers and crewmen aboard the ship Dashun died in a shipwreck near Yantai -- the most serious shipwreck in China since 1949. Currently, the Yantai Maritime Bureau is taking measures to establish a sound maritime rescue system and professional rescue team. All ships passing the Bohai Bay will be required to equip with an automatic identifying system before Nov. 1 this year, said the bureau, adding that the system may help the vessels send helping information timely to the rescue team when shipwrecks occur. |
