Construction of all World Expo Village buildings finished on July 8 as engineers completed the last hotel in the D-block village area.
D-block is home to seven ecology-friendly hotels for Expo and the largest of seven blocks of the village to offer accommodation for the six-month long event in 2010. Shanghai No. 5 Construction Co made the announcement on July 9.
Engineers in charge of the seven blocks are now moving on to interior decorations and setting up support facilities.
Hotels in the Expo Village will offer accommodation to Expo delegations from overseas and some other visitors."The apartment hotels will receive marble exterior surfaces while inside, the decorations will follow an economic and comfortable style rather than being luxurious," said D-block complex project manager Ding Lifeng.
As required by the government, hotel buildings have been designed to be energy-efficient. Efforts have been made to reduce power and water consumption.
"We have set up pools to store rain water and have also adopted a recycling system to save water for washing and cleaning tasks," the manager said.
Special power control equipment was installed to monitor and restrict power consumption, the engineers said.
The D-block program started in July last year. By June, energy-saving efforts have helped to conserve nearly 67,450 cubic meters of tap water, the company said.
With an investment of 220 million yuan (US$32 million), the village's D-block will have a hotel complex with one 24-story tower and three 16-story towers, plus three 20-story apartment buildings.
They will stand in rows in order of height, facing the Huangpu River, about 300 meters away, with the lowest next to the river bank to ensure all residents get a view of the river.
