Shaanxi Province on mainland China is one of the major cradles
of the Chinese civilization. Historically, 13 regimes built their seats
here, including the Zhou Dynasty(11th century-221 B.C.), the Qin
Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), and
the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
Shaanxi takes pride in its 35,750, proven relics from above and
underground, including 55 relics under state protection and 355 relics
under provincial protection. It leads China in the number and quality of
relics collected, 600,000 in total, attracting numerous visitors from
home and abroad to admire historic sites and places of interest, such
as the terracotta warriors and horses from the tomb of Emperor Qin
Shihuang, the Qianling Tomb, where Empress Wu Zetian and Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty were buried, the Yangling Tomb
of Emperor Jingdi of the Han Dynasty, the Famen Temple, which
enshrines the finger bones of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, the
ancient city wall in Van, the best preserved and largest of its kind in
China, and the Stele Forest, China's largest stone library.
Shaanxi is enchanting with its rich tourism resources and splendid
natural landscapes, such as the magnificent Mt. Huashan, the snow-
capped Mt. Taibai, the Pot Spout Waterfall, the second largest in
China. the Guanshan Plain, the Hongjian Lake. China's largest fresh-
wafer lake on deserts, the marsh land in the Yellow River region, the
Zhashui Karst Caves, and the Hongsi Lake. It is a pleasant home to
many rare species of animals, such as cresteb ibis, giant pandas,
and rhinopithecus roxellanae. The province is also attractive for its
strong. cultural flavor, such as the Qin Opera, farmer's paintings
paper-cuffs, clay figurines, shadow puppets, and cloth handicrafts,
simple and unique.
Shaanxi has seen a rapid development over the last few years in
Tourist facilities and services to meet international standards. Today,
there are 31 international travel agencies, 224 national travel agencies, 72 foreign-oriented hotels, among which 4 are five stars, 7 four
stars, and 42 three stars, 15 tourist-oriented automobile companies
with over 20.000 vehicles, and three exhibition halls for the purpose
of tourism.
