Traditional holidays in China are connected to both the traditional Chinese
lunar calendar and the western calendar.
The "Spring Festival" (Chun Jie) celebrates the Chinese New Year. Generally
it falls between January and February and is the first day of the lunar calendar.
The arrival of the New Year is celebrated with fireworks and dancing. For the
Chinese it is a time to stay with the family, thanks to the three days of holiday.
The New Year celebrations end with the "Lantern Festival" (Yuanxiao Jie), which
falls on the fifteenth day of the lunar year. At this time lanterns are displayed
and typical rice-flower sweets, the delicious yuanxiao, are eaten.
The "Festival of the Dragon Boats" (Duanwu Jie) is another holiday tied to
the traditional calendar. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month the holiday
is celebrated with dragon-boat races throughout the country.
In the months of January and February, the "Ice Festival" takes place in various
Chinese cities. The largest and best-known of these is held in the city of Harbin,
in the northeast of the country. On this occasion there are sports activities
on the ice and the "Festival of the Ice Lanterns" takes place in the city park,
with authentic ice artists.
The "International Qingdao Beer Festival" takes place in the gracious city
of Shandong during the month of July. For this celebration, the beer, which
is produced from the mineral water of nearby Mount Laoshan, flows like a river
at beach festivals and other events.
In the month of October at Wuhan, in the Hubei province, the " International
Acrobatics Festival" takes place. For this occasion the most famous acrobatic
troupes come to carry out extremely spectacular exercises.
