
A German environmental expert from the United Nations Environment Program today praised th e Shanghai Expo organizers for their environmental aeareness in a visit to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
Christian Hochfeld, the deputy director of the Oko Institute for Applied Ecology, said it was good of the organizers to implement the "Better Life, Better City" Expo theme in environmental protection, after hearing a progress report from Huang Jianzhi, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
Hochfeld praised the organizers' efforts and said he was looking forward to the "Green Expo" in 2010.
Huang said the Expo organizers have always attached great importance to environmental protection. He said the organizers planned to build a large rainwater collecting system and a solar energy system in the Expo site to provide most of the water and electricity. Huang said most of the pavilions would be built with environmentally friendly materials and would conserve energy.
Huang hopen UNEP could offer more guidance with Expo preparations.
After the meeting, Hochfeld visited the master plan exhibition hall.
The Bureau of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination began cooperating with UNEP on environmental protection in May. UNEP agreed to carry out an evaluation on the environment.
