General Information: Changde (or Changteh ), on the Yuan River, formerly was a treaty port, it is now an administrative center and a storage and shipping point for tung oil, grain, cotton, medicinal herbs, and wood. Changde was called Wuling and Dingzhou in ancient times. It is located in the northwest of Hunan Province. To the west is Zhangjiajie and to the east is the broad Dongtinghu Plain. With abundant products and beautiful natural scenery, Changde is a "land offish and rice" and an interesting place for tourists. Major scenic spots are the Taohuayuan (the Land of Peach Blossoms) and the Jiashan Temple.
Geography: Changde is located on the Yuan River in northern Hunan province. It is encircled by mountains on the northwest, and opens onto a plain on the southeast.
Climate: Climate is mild and moist.
Nature: In Changde's region there are 2,472 kinds of fauna and flora, among them 24 are rare animals and 17 precious plants.
Changde Economy: Manufactures include ceramics, machine tools, textiles, leather, and processed foods. Agricultural products of Changde include rice, wheat, edible oils, sesame seeds, peanuts, cotton, and tobacco. Machinery, textiles, chemicals, wood products, and leather goods are the city's principal manufactures. Local mines extract gold, silver, iron ore, and diamonds. Hydroelectric power generators on the Yuan River supply more than 10 percent of Hunan province's electricity.
History: Changde is the site of a stele (large stone tablet) commemorating the tomb of Chunshen, a ruler of the ancient state of Chu, who died in 238 BC. Other notable historic sites in Changde include an iron pillar inscribed with Buddhist scripture that dates from the Song dynasty (AD 960-1279), and a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) tomb. There are 276 preserved historic sites within the city.

Changde Attractive points: Taohuayuan It is located in Taoyuan County and is 23 km away from Changde. The temples here were built in the 10th century. During the reign of Guangxu (1875-1908) of the Qing Dynasty, a scenic spot was formed according to "On the Land of Peach Blossoms" written by Tao Yuanming, a famous writer ofthe Jin Dynasty. The tourism area today is composed of four parts: the Taohua Mountain, the Taohualing Hill, the Taoyuan Mountain and the Qinren Village. Jiashan Temple It is about 15 km southeast of Shimen County in Changde and was firstly built in the 11th year of the Xiantong reign ofthe Tang Dynasty (870). Changde Poem Wall Changde Poem Wall is a 3 kilometer-long anti-flood dyke alongside the Yuanjiang River, which is engraved with poems, handwriting and painting and thus is listed as the longest wall with engraved arts in Guinness Record.
