General Information: Known as "Lesser Shanghai," Liaoyuan is a coal-mining center with a large thermal generating plant.
Geography: The city of Liaoyuan sprawls along the banks of the Dongliao River in the central south of Jilin Province. Standing on a half mountainous region, Liaoyuan city appears as a transition from the Changbai Mountains in the east of Jilin Province to the Songnen Plain in the west of the province.
Nature: Surrounded by the mountains, undulating hills, crisscross valleys and rivers, the city reveals some advantageous features both of the mountain and plain.
Liaoyuan Economy: The city is a coal mining center., and coal has been excavated almost for 100 years there. It is also a national production base of commodity grain, producing maize, sorghum, soybean, and paddy rice Liaoyuan is well-developed in livestock breeding. It leads other parts of China in the amount of sika deer on hand. In recent years, because of the increase of local industry, the city has evolved from a unitary coal industrial city into a modern industrial one with various departments and strong productive force, taking light industry as the mainstay. Now, the city has altogether over 800 enterprises and 38 industries including textiles, machinery, medicine, chemistry, new materials, coal, metallurgy, building materials, thermal power generation, electronics and foodstuffs, etc. and the output of automobile parts and plastic products take up a larger portion in the province. The products of light industry such as textiles, down jackets, longquanchun(Long Spring) Wine, etc., are famous inside and outside the province. There search and development of some new materials are comparatively in the lead inside and outside the province. Agricultural production Dongfeng County and Dongliao County are national bases for commodity grains, abounding with corn, rice and soybean. The per unit area yield remains at a higher-stage level. Two counties are also the national advanced counties of planting one million of man-made forests. Planting of ginseng and raising of deer have a long history in the city. Starting to raise deer in the later years of the Qing Dynasty, Dongfeng County has become a world-famous home of sika, ranking first in the yield of pilose antler in China.
History: Liaoyuan was an imperial hunting ground during the Cling Dynasty. It was the capital of Liaobei province from 1945 to 1949; from 1949 to 1954 it was part of Liaodong province.
Arrive: The city has convenient communications. The railways run through the whole region and the highways run crisscross, which contributes to the formation of a developed network of highway transportation.
