China Nantong City:
Nantong

General Information:
The charming city of Nantong ("Southern Opening") is located at the northern part of the Yangtze Delta. With Yangtze River to the south and the Yellow Sea to the east, the city has won the names of "pearl on the Yangtze River and the Yellow Sea", No.1 window of the Yangtze River". It is one of the 14 coastal cities first opened to the outside world by the country.

Geography:
Nantong, in East China's Jiangsu Province, borders on the Yellow Sea to its east, looks out on the Yangtze River to its south and faces Shanghai across the river.

Climate:
Nantong has a mild climate.

Nature:
Nantong is a famous garden city in China with the Haohe River encircling the city proper like a slowly flowing jade necklace.

Nantong Economy:
Nantong is one of China's 14 coastal cities first opened in 1984 to the outside world, and a hot spot for international investments.
Nantong boasts complete industrial categories of textile, light industry, machinery, electronics, chemical industry, medicine, building materials, construction, ship-building, electricity, and so on.

History:
Because the coast of the East China Sea is constantly moving eastward as the Yangzi River adds silt to its delta, Nantong was much closer to the seashore in ancient times. From the time of the Han dynasty through to the Tang dynasty, what is now called Nantong was a minor county subordinate to Yangzhou. By 958 AD a city of sufficient importance had developed for a new, independent prefecture called Tongzhou to be created. The increasing wealth of Yangzhou caused it to once again eclipse Tongzhou as an administrative center in 1368. When Tongzhou finally regained prefecture status in 1724, it was renamed "Southern Tong" to avoid confusion with another Tongzhou, located near Beijing.
The prosperity of Nantong has traditionally depended on salt production on the nearby seacoast, rice and cotton agriculture, and especially the production of cotton textiles. A local statesman and industrialist named Zhang Jian (Chang Chien) founded Nantong's first modern cotton mills in 1899, then developed an industrial complex that included flour, oil, and silk reeling mills, a distillery, and a machine shop. He also founded a shipping line and reclaimed saline agricultural land to the east of Nantong for cotton production. By 1911, Nantong was commonly called "Zhang Jian's Kingdom".
Although suffering from the economic depression of the 1930s and the Japanese occupation of the 1930s and 40s, Nantong has remained an important center for the textile industry. Because of its deep-water harbour and connections to inland navigational canals, it was one of 14 port cities opened to foreign investment in the recent economic reforms.

Arrive:
Nantong functions as a hub of communications linking the north side of Yangtze River with its south side and connecting the hinterland with the ports. Now a communication network cosisting of water-, land- and air- routes in a coordinated fashion has been developed, with all the infrastructures being improved and approaching perfection day by day. Nantong Harbour is one of China's top ten ports; Nantong Xindong Airport, a Class B airport approved by the authorities at the state level, has flights to lots of domestic cities and international flights as well; and the State Highway 204, Tongo-Ning (Nantong-Nanjing) Class-A Highway and high-speed passenger boat lines crisscross, leading in all directions.

Nantong Tourism:
The picturesque Nantong city is surrounded by an ancient moat, and dotted with pavilions, towers and bridges of various kinds. As one of the eight famous Buddhist mountains, Langshan Mountain attracts an influx of tourists.

Entertainments:
Nantong has a series of tourist programs, such as 'Beach Disco'(seashore clamming) and Air Symphony'.

Nantong Culture:
Folklore
East of Nantong is Lang Shan (Wolf Hill), believed to be haunted by the spirit of a white wolf. On top of the hill is a Buddhist temple dedicated to a Song-dynasty monk. Because of the monk's legendary powers over water demons, sailors pray to him for protection on their voyages.

Nantong Attractive points:
On both banks of the river are Nantong Museum, Taofen Memorial Park, Shenshou Art Museum, Zhaodan Pavilion, and Geyi Art Centre. The modem buildings and the traditional architectures contrast finely with each other, showing the city's cultural traditions and artistic flavour.
To the south of the city proper lies the well-known Langshan Scenic Spot, which includes Langshan Hill, Junshan Hill, Jianshan Hill, Ma'anshan Hill and Huangnishan Hill, ranging 4.5 km along the Yangtze River. On the top of Langshan Hill, the highest in the five hills, you can see that the Yangtze River joins the sky and can have a bird's eye view of the vast green land with crisscross footpaths.
The beautiful scenes have attracted many literates, poets, writers and scholars to come here. You can find couplets and ancient poems written by famous literati on pillars and stones in the scenic spot area. Many foreign friends are deeply impressed by the scenery and gasp with admiration at the beauty. Besides, there are many other tourist spots, namely, they are Hai'an Qingdun New Stone Age Site, Dinghui Temple, Shuihuiyuan Grove, Horticulture Garden, and Yuantuojiao Cape.
Langshan Hill
Overlooking the Changjiang River, Langshan Hill together with Junshan and Jianshan hills to its east and Ma'an and Huangni hills to its west are collectively called the five hills. Standing on top of Langshan Hill, one may have a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery with water extending to the horizon.
