China Tieli City:
Tieli
Resident People: 265,683 (1991).
General Information: Tieli is located in central Heilongjiang province, along the Hulan River.
Nature: Tieli is surrounded by forests, which provide habitat for a number of large wildlife species, including tigers, red deer, and black bears.
Tieli Economy: The forest resources provide an economic base for the city, along with iron and gold mining industries. In addition to wood products, the city produces electric power, building materials, and textiles. Agricultural products grown in the area include soybeans, wheat, and maize (corn).
History: The region was traditionally occupied by Oroqen and Mongolian peoples, and ethnic minorities still make up nearly 6 percent of Tieli's population. The name Tieli (¡°iron strength¡±) originates from the Tang (T'ang) dynasty (618-907), when the area first came under Chinese control. Tieli was designated a city in 1988.
Shopping: Chinese Antique Tieli Furniture Tieli wood is often confused with jichimu, yet lacks the latter's contrasting colors. Tieli is predominantly grayish black, and its open grain has a coarse texture. It once grew abundant in Guangdong where its large timbers were used for bridges and house construction; on Hainan Island the natives used it for firewood. Nevertheless, in the more northern regions its was regarded as a rare hardwood and was noted for as a desirable wood for furniture-making in late Ming texts. Furniture made from tieli often has a thick quality and is frequently with little or no carved decoration.
