General Information:
Yakeshi (its original name, Xuguit Qi, came from the Mongolian word for the area) is located in north eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Geography:
Yakeshi is located on the north side of the Hinggan Mountains along the Hailar River, 70 km (40 mi) east of the city of Hailar.
Yakeshi Economy:
The city's economy is centered upon the forestry industry. In addition to wood products, Yakeshi produces traditional Chinese medicines made of plants gathered from the surrounding forests. Other economic activities at Yakeshi include gold, coal, iron, and copper mining; wheat and rapeseed farming; sheep raising; and dairy industries.
History:
Its name was changed to Yakeshi in 1983 when it was designated a county-level city.
