ADB to aid Yinchuan ecosystem management p

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a loan of up to 100 million US dollars for northwest China's Ningxia Yinchuan Integrated Ecosystem Management Project, said an official of the regional forestry bureau here on Wednesday.
Aiming to eliminate poverty in mountain areas and improve regional policy, legal and regulatory frameworks, the project has been listed under the Operational Program 12 (OP12) of GEF (the Global Environment Facility) and will receive a donation of 10 million US dollars from the GEF, according to the official.
The GEF-OP12 promotes adoption of integrated ecosystem management (IEM) approaches to address land degradation (LD) problems, and provides technical and financial support to solving problems of inter-agency and cross-regional natural resource management.
The China-GEF Partnership on LD in Dryland Ecosystem is the first large-scale cooperative project in the country to integrate environmental objectives into national development planning.
The first phase of the project, started in 2004, covers all six northwestern provinces and autonomous regions including Sha'anxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang.
