Ancient ethnic Dong village being restored in central China

The second phase of a restoration project for an ancient village in central China's Hunan Province is expected to be completed in 2012.
The first phase of the project was finished in 2010, in the village of Yutou Dong in the province's Tongdao Dong Autonomous County, while the second phase of the project is currently under way. A road and parts of several buildings in the village will be restored by the end of this year, according to Yang Shaoyong, head of the county's cultural relic management department.
Architectural styles dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties have been well-preserved in the village. However, many of the structures in the village are dilapidated and will likely collapse, according to the archaeologists.
The village was built between the years of 1368 and 1398, according to the archaeologists. There are currently 182 ethnic Dong families living in the village. |
