Asia's Largest Ocean Aquarium Opens in Shanghai

One of the largest indoor, closed-system aquariums in the world and the largest ocean aquarium in Asia, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, opened today (Friday). A joint venture between Singapore's tourism corporation Straco and China's Poly Group, the aquarium is located in Pudong's Lujiazui financial district. It is equipped with a 155 metre underwater viewing tunnel, one of the world's longest, and serviced by a travellator. The over 10,000 marine creatures from 360 different species are displayed according to their respective continents. 30 percent of them are either endangered or protected species, both within China as well as internationally. The total investment in the aquarium has reached 50 million US dollars. |
