Backgrounder: China's Scheme to increase coverage of radio, television programs
|
10-Jul-2002 - |
China launched a scheme in 1998 to help people living in rural and remote areas have access to radio and television programs. The final target is to enable all villages in the country to have access to radio and television programs. According to statistics, by March 2001, China had invested more than 1.62 billion yuan (195 million U.S. dollars) into the scheme, enabling more than 100,000 villages to have their first access to radio and television programs. Nearly 70 million people have benefited from the scheme so far. Sinosat, which was affected by illegal TV signals broadcast by the Falun Gong cult recently, has two transponders used to transmit programs broadcast by the nine channels of China Central Television (CCTV) and TV stations of the Inner Mongolia AutonomousRegion, Henan, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai Provinces, and Chongqing Municipality. Radio and television departments first digitalize these radio and television program signals before transmitting them to Sinosat, which sends the radio and television signals to ground after they are enhanced by the transponders. The radio and television signals transmitted by Sinosat cover vast remote areas and regions in China, enabling people there to receive these radio and television programs. |
