Baiyun airport rivals Shanghai and Hong Kong
|
6-Aug-2004 - |
(www.ttgtravelhub.net 2004-08-03) Guangzhou's new Baiyun International Airport opens for business this week presenting Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong with its greatest challenge. The aim of the Guangdong government is to establish Baiyun as a major direct competitor to both Shanghai and Hong Kong as the aviation gateway to China. The new runways and huge terminal will be able to handle 25 million passengers and there are already plans to double capacity. The US$2 billion complex poses a major threat to Hong Kong's airport because of lower costs and landing fees, according to some analysts. Not only is this likely to attract international airlines to GuangZhou but it could also lure some Hong Kong travellers over the border to get cheaper flights. Chek Lap Kok handles about 45 million passengers annually and can raise that to 87 million. The Hong Kong hub has 80 airlines flying to 150 international cities and 42 mainland destinations. Baiyun is connected to just 22 international cities but more than 72 mainland cities. |
