Beijing Airport Customs Intercepts 1,435 Antiques in 2001

Customs authority at Beijing's Capital Airport intercepted 1,435 pieces of antiques in 2001, a big rise over the previous year.
Of the 1,435 objects, 674 are strictly forbidden for export, while 761 are restricted for export, customs officials said recently.
The two figures are up 25 percent and 69 percent, respectively, over the numbers for 2000.
Among the rare pieces intercepted by the customs are 20 ancient paintings worth 190,000 yuan and six ancient ceramic objects valued at 220,000 yuan.
The customs officials have vowed enhanced cooperation with the cultural relics protection authority this year to prevent relics from being smuggled out of the country.
