|
18-Jan-2006 - Shanghai Daily |

The under-construction Shanghai South Railway Station will be finished in March and begin trial operation in April. The station, whose giant round ceiling is 278 meters in diameter, is expected to handle 15 million passengers annually.
A record 20 billion yuan (US$2.47 billion) will be invested this year to improve the rail network in the city and three neighboring provinces, according to the Shanghai Railway Administration.
The investment will finance nearly 30 projects ¡ª 12 of which will begin construction this year, including a more comprehensive inter-city rail transit network within the Yangtze River Delta region. Other new projects involve upgrading the trains' power source from diesel fuel to electricity.
The plan features five new lines including Huning Line and Huhang Line comprising 815 kilometers of track on which trains will be able to run at speeds up to 300 kilometers an hour.
The Huning Line, between Nanjing and Shanghai; and the Huhang Line which will connect Shanghai and Hangzhou, should begin construction this year.
