The possible sale of human breast milk has been forbidden by China's Ministry of Health, an official in central China's Hunan Province said Monday. On Jan. 26, a restaurant in Changsha, capital of Hunan, put on its menu 12 dishes made from the breast milk of six women in the province's mountainous areas. The incident aroused a heated dispute on the marketing of breast milk products across the country, forcing the restaurant to suspend production. Huang Jinsong, an official with the Hunan provincial health department, said the Ministry of Health had made it clear that "breast milk cannot be taken as merchandise or traded for profits". Selling breast milk is a violation of human ethics because it will deprive some babies' rights of being breast-fed by their mothers, he said. Besides, it is hard to conduct quality control on the "production, transportation, preservation, processing and trade of the milk", Huang said. Restaurants found handling breast milk products would be severely punished in line with relevant laws and regulations, he said.
