Bronze Statue Erected for Organ Donor in Nanjing

A bronze statue commemorating a 24-year-old woman's donation of her organs for transplant has been erected in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province. Yu Lu, a medical worker, died in a traffic accident one year ago and her parents fulfilled her last wish to be an organ donor. Her corneas have helped two patients recover from cataracts. "She brought me light and gave me a new life," said Fu Shungen, a 64-year-old engineer, who was nearly blind before operation. The bronze statue is located in Gongde Park in Yuhuatai Martyrs' Mausoleum, with six Chinese characters engraved on the pedestal representing how her spirit will live on. Bundles of flowers were laid at the statue by visitors, including about 100 senior citizens wearing Red Cross badges from a society for organ donation run by the Nanjing Red Cross. Almost 2,000 Nanjing citizens have applied to donate their organs after death and 190 have already given new life to others, said Yin Ming, a senior official with the society. A cemetery was set up by the municipality last year for organ donors where they can be buried under tree instead of a tombstone. |
