Cathay stalled on Shanghai route
|
8-Apr-2004 - |
Cathay Pacific's hopes of starting new services to Shanghai seem to have run into extreme turbulence with China Eastern Airlines publicly speaking out against giving the rival carrier the right to fly the route. China Eastern president, Mr Ye Yigan, has been quoted in local Shanghai media saying the company did not want Cathay adding the city to its network and he thought it unlikely Cathay would get the rights this year. The Civil Aeronautics Administration of China (CAAC) has yet to rule on the matter. In the past, the CAAC has supported liberalised flight agreements but these were with foreign countries and Hong Kong is considered part of China. Hong Kong government and mainland officials are holding informal talks about an overall new air services deal. Sources at Cathay have described it as critically important for airlines in Hong Kong and China to receive equal rights, and access to Shanghai is a key component of this. |
