China's Arctic expedition team reaches western hemisphere

ABOARD XUELONG, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China's third Arctic expedition team reached the western hemisphere Wednesday to continue its exploration tasks in the Bering Sea.
The icebreaker Xuelong, carrying some 120 scientists and logistics staff, crossed longitude 180 degrees at 4 p.m. local time (0400 GMT).
The Bering Sea, a northward extension of the Pacific Ocean between Siberia and Alaska, is one of the major exploration areas for the expedition team.
In this area, scientists had planned to explore physical, chemical, geological and biological conditions at 35 observation posts. The team has completed observation activities in 11 posts so far.
The Xuelong, which left Shanghai on July 11, reached the Bering Sea last Saturday.
The exploration in the Sea will last until July 29, and then the ship will travel to the Arctic Ocean after a short break.
In the Arctic, the team will study the polar region's distinctive maritime resources and air quality, and conduct comprehensive research on geological and meteorological conditions during the 75-day expedition.
