31-May-2002 - |
The China Development Gateway (chinagate.com.cn) which aims to help promote regional development and reduce poverty, was officially launched Tuesday, marking the implementation of information network technology as an important means for poverty reduction and sustainable development.
Prior to the official launch of the website, President of the World Bank (WB) James David Wolfensohn and Chinese Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng signed a memorandum of understanding on China's joining the Development Gateway Foundation as a founding member of its board.
The Development Gateway Foundation, initiated by the World Bank at the end of 2001, aims to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development by using information network technology. The Country Development Program is one of the key programs of the Development Gateway Foundation, which aims to bridge the "digital gap" between developed countries and developing countries.
The China Development Gateway aims to provide a two-way communication channel to enhance international communication and cooperation, and to contribute to integrating China into the global economy, and provide a framework to promote e-development in China.
The China Development Gateway is a bilingual website providing information covering current affairs, poverty relief activities, business information and the WB's activities in China. It will also provide services for tourism, weather forecasting and finance.
Xiang Huaicheng said China's joining the Development Gateway Foundation and the launch of the China Development Gateway will contribute to eliminating poverty, bridging the "digital gap" and promoting common development.
Wolfensohn said that China's commitment to the Development Gateway Foundation and the launch of the China Development Gateway are "major milestones". The website will help China share knowledge and keep close contact with the rest of the world. It will not only serve Chinese people but also people around the world.
The China Development Gateway was set up by the China Internet Information Center under the auspices of China's Ministry of Finance, the State Council Information Office and the WB.
