China notified 63 technical barriers to trade (TBT) measures to WTO members through the WTO secretariat in 2006 -- the second highest number after the U.S. --aiming to protect public health and the environment.
Wang Nini, a senior official with China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said on Tuesday that many of China's TBT measures were promulgated as mandatory standards, covering fields such as electronic products, information technology, motor vehicles, chemical products, food and paper.
In 2006, China made assessment reports responding to 251 overseas TBT measures, or 26 percent of the world's total, involving 34 WTO members including the its three largest trading partners, the U.S., Japan, and the EU.
Some of the notifications urged WTO members to change the measures or delay the effective dates of new measures to reduce the negative impact on China's exports.
According to the official, China also reported six Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures to WTO members last year. |
