China, US agree to continue negotiations on textiles: spokesman
|
19-Aug-2005 - People's Daily |
China and the United States agreed to continue textiles negotiations in a bid to find a solution to their disputes over the issue and create an environment for the stable development of bilateral textile trade, a spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday in Beijing.
The spokesman made the remarks while commenting on the third round of Sino-US talks on China's textile exports held on Tuesday and Wednesday in San Francisco.
"There are still substantial differences over some fundamental issues between the two sides," said the spokesman.
China has expressed "strong opposition" to the US government for its accepting an application to impose quotas on five Chinese textile products.
The application, accepted by the US Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements earlier this month, covered skirts, pajamas, swimming suits, tatting shirts and socks.
China has said that such a move runs counter to the free trade principles of the World Trade Organization and encourages further abusive uses of the special restrictive measures on the Chinese textile products.
This is the second time that the United States has accepted a restrictive application after it accepted a similar one in July on Chinese curtains exported to the United States.
On Aug. 1, the US Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements announced that it has decided to delay the decision on whether it will restrict the exports of six Chinese textile products, including woolen trousers, until August 31.
China hopes the United States will take concrete measures before that date in an effort "to find a solution satisfactory to both through consultations".
