China calls for end to export subsidies
|
12-Jul-2005 - Xinhua |
China's Trade Minister Bo Xilai has urged the World Trade Organization member states to accept 2010 as the deadline for the elimination of export subsidies. He also called for a consensus on thresholds for market access and agricultural supports. In a meeting with WTO chief Supachai Panitchpakdi ahead of a two-day WTO mini-ministerial in Dalian on Tuesday, Bo said these goals would help successfully conclude the WTO's Doha Round of trade talks. Some 32 trade ministers are set to take part in the Dalian meeting, out of the WTO's full membership of 148. The meeting is a part of the Doha Round of talks, launched in the Qatari capital in 2001, which aims to expand free trade in a way that benefits poor nations. The EU and the United States are broadly hoping that the developing countries will offer concessions on trade in services and industrial goods, in exchange for an end to their trade distorting agricultural subsidies. |
