29-Sep-2002 - |
Hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world gathered in Yinchuan, the capital of Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to celebrate China's World Tourism Day festivities. During the week-long celebration, folk performances will take place, along with a Muslim snack festival, an international tourism photo show and a tourism commodity fair. Meanwhile, the city, reputed to be one of China's best tourist attractions, will hold a forum for mayors from world cities and a meeting on travel agencies' strategies for the development of West China. In 1979, the World Tourism Organization decided to celebrate World Tourism Day once a year as a festival for both tourism workers and tourists. China joined the organization in 1983 and has held "World Tourism Day" celebrations in a number of cities, including Beijing,Shanghai and Chongqing municipalities. |
