|
10-Jun-2003 - |
Life has returned to normal at Shenzhen, China's busiest port, since World Health Organization (WHO) lifted on May 23 an advisory against travel to Guangdong province and Hong Kong to curb the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The Shenzhen Frontier Defense Headquarters for Re-entry and Entry said that from May 23 to June 6, the flow of travelers via the port of Shenzhen was 4.52 million, with a daily average of over 300,000 travelers. During the period, 3.02 million travelers passed through Luohucheckpoint and the number of passengers passing via Huanggang checkpoint amounted to 1.17 million, almost reaching usual numbers. Brisk business also resumed at most restaurants, teahouses, andshopping centers around the checkpoints. Guangdong province was one of China's worst-affected areas and the WHO issued an advisory against travel in the southern provinceon April 2. Because of the SARS threat, services trades, such as catering and travel agencies have gone out of business. |
