15-Jan-2003 - |
A total of 228.27 million people passed through China's ports of entry or border check points in 2002, up 13 percent over the previous year, the Ministry of Public Security said Monday. The year 2002 marked the 13th consecutive year that the number of those entering and leaving the Chinese mainland had shown year-on-year growth. Luohu Port in Shenzhen, a boomtown bordering Hong Kong, ranked first among the country's ports of entry in terms of the number of people entering and leaving the Chinese mainland. About 94.27 million people passed through the port, or 41.3 percent of the national total. Luohu was followed by Gongbei Port in Zhuhai City also in Guangdong Province, south China, Huanggang Port in Shenzhen, and by ports in Beijing's Capital Airport and Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport and Pudong Airport. Officers with the ministry said the increase is a reflection of expanded economic, trade and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao and other countries. |
