China to further control aluminum output

The overall output of China's aluminum will be kept under control, while high-tech should be encouraged in aluminum production, according to the latest centralgovernment program.
"Policy guidance and macro-control should be further strengthened to promote the healthy, orderly development of the aluminum industry," said a program passed Wednesday at a State Council meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.
China has been curbing the excess production of aluminum and other raw material industries in a bid to rein in its overheating economy over the past year.
The program said the development of the aluminum industry should cater to China's resources, energy and market demand. New electrolytic aluminum projects should be strictly examined before being approved.
Efforts should be made to push forward technical renovation andcut down aluminum plants with high consumption of electricity power, while developing aluminum products with high added value, it said.
