|

The Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China recently decided to start the protection program of the entire Great Wall from the preservation and restoration of the Shanhai Pass, gradually carry out the rehabilitation project of the Great Wall, and strengthen the protection of this cultural heritage of China.
The Great Wall is a precious cultural heritage of the Chinese nation and what remain today were repaired in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Chinese government has undertaken restoration on the Shanhai Pass, Badaling, the Jiayu Pass and some other sections of the Great Wall; however, the Great Wall is still seriously damaged owing to natural and human factors, and the preservation and restoration of the Great Wall become more urgent. The Shanhai Pass is the east end of the Great Wall. Though comparatively well preserved on the whole, the wall of the Pass has been seriously damaged.
The preservation and restoration project of the Shanhai Pass marks the beginning of the protection program of the entire Great Wall, and experience gained in this project will help promote the protection and development of the entire Great Wall. The Ministry of Finance will earmark a special fund for the protection and restoration of the Great Wall. After relevant planning, demonstration, examination and approval work is finished, the Ministry will ensure that the fund is allocated on time and in full so that the old rampart of the Shanhai Pass will be completely renovated before the 2008 Olympic Games. The rest of the Great Wall will be restored according to plan. |
