Chinese mainland becomes major tourist source for Macao
|
20-Jan-2003 - |
The Chinese mainland has become the major source of tourists for Macao with some 3.7 million mainland tourists visiting the special administrative region in the first 11 months of last year. Currently, more than 20 tourist agencies in Macao are seeking cooperation with their counterparts in Shanghai, China's east coast metropolis, with the intention of inviting more local tourists during the upcoming spring festival season. Shanghai, with a huge population of more than 10 million, had maintained close economic and trade ties with Macao, said Wen Qihua, deputy-director of the Macao tourist bureau. According to Wen, last November the number of mainland tourists to Macao surpassed those from Hong Kong and climbed to top place for the first time. An estimated 3 million mainland tourists visited Macao in 2001 compared with 1.6 million in 1999, the year China resumed sovereignty over the region. Wen attributed the increase to the opening up of China's tourism and the improving tourist environment in Macao. At present some 528 mainland tourist agencies, 32 of them in Shanghai. are authorized to organize trips to Hong Kong and Macao. |
