A movie producer from the Chinese mainland said here on Wednesday his group has started the shootingof a TV drama featuring the story of Matsu, a Goddess of the Sea jointly worshipped by local residents across the Taiwan Straits.

The drama was handwritten by Wang Daohan, late Chinese mainland's top negotiator on Taiwan affairs, who had made great contributions to the development of cross-Straits relations.

Wang, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, passed away in Shanghai last Saturday at the age of 90.

"Mr. Wang had given some ideas on the shooting of the drama andhoped the drama could contribute somewhat to cross-Straits cultural exchanges," said producer Chen Yuanlin at a press conference.

He said he will bring the news to religious and cultural circles in Taiwan.

According to legends, Lin Muo, who was later worshipped as Matsu, was born as her mother's seventh daughter and became an excellent swimmer at the age of 15. She was said to have saved herbrothers from sea storms when her soul flew out over there while her body was like dead.

At the age of 28, she climbed a mountain alone and flew to heaven, thus becoming a goddess. The families of many fishermen and sailors began to pray to her in honor of her acts of courage in saving those at sea.
