Chongqing becomes largest gas car base
|
02-Dec-2005 - Xinhua |
China's State Gas Car Engineering Technology Institute Director Li Kaiguo indicated recently that Chongqing has become China's biggest industrial base for natural gas-fueled vehicles.
To date natural gas vehicle and relevant industries in Chongqing have made over 1 billion yuan (US$123 million) of annual output value and US$10 million of export value.
By the end of this September, Chongqing has sold 24,371 units of natural gas automobiles, constituting one-sixth of China's total. The city, together with Chengdu, sold the largest quantities of natural gas vehicles. A group of natural gas vehicle manufacturers and "oil-to-gas" enterprises consequently surfaced.
Chongqing started research, development, promotion and application of natural gas autos in the 1990s. Nowadays it is leading the country in product scale, market share and technological level.
Statistics show that in 2003, natural gas vehicles in Chongqing consumed 146 million cubic meters of natural gas, replacing around 146 million liters of fuel. Calculated on an average gasoline price of 3.32 yuan per liter and a natural gas price of 1.52 yuan per cubic meter, the city saved 262.8 million yuan in the year. In 2004, Chongqing's natural gas vehicles substituted 180 million liters of fuel and saved 324 million yuan. According to primary statistics, Chongqing saved 480 million yuan through natural gas vehicles from Jan. to Sep. this year.
The natural gas auto industry also brings favorable benefits to environmental protection. The city's existing natural gas vehicles can reduce emission of 33,460 tons of pollutants a year, thus saving over 10 million yuan of expenditure on environmental protection and pollution control.
