Chongqing railcar contract signed

Hitachi and two Japanese companies were awarded recently the right to provide Hitachi technology and key equipment for 84 railcars for the light rail system in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China. According to a contract signed here recently, the Japanese companies will cooperate with ChangChun Railcar Co. to produce the railcars worth 10 billion yen (about 81 million US dollars). Huang Qifan, vice-mayor of Chongqing, said the railcars will be used in the initial phase of a light rail line, which will span 14.35 km and cost 3.55 billion yuan (4.32 billion US dollars). The project, launched in 2000, is part of a planned 300-km rail network in Chongqing, which has a population of more than 15 million. |
