This municipality in southwest China has built a total of 20 bridges across the Yangtze River andone of its tributaries, the Jialing River, gaining it the new nickname of "bridge city".

Its traditional nicknames are ``hilly city" and foggy city".

Bao Xuding, mayor of the city, said that among all the China's metropolises and medium-sized cities, Chongqing has the most bridges.

In the past five years, the city has speeded up its infrastructure construction.

Earlier this year, the Yu Ao bridge across Jialing River, jointly built by Chongqing and Macao with an investment of 800 million yuan, was completed .

The bridge, 4,400 meters long, parallels the Jialingjiang Bridge, located on the lower reaches of the Jialing River. It allows automobiles to enter Chongqing via the Yu Ao Bridge and exit via the Jialingjiang Bridge, easing the city's traffic jams.

Bao said that the rivers and mountains which surround Chongqing pose big problems for the city's transportation system. Therefore, laying highways and building bridges are expected to be the city's main tasks in the coming years.

Previously, it normally took five to ten years for the city to build a bridge. But last year, with high work efficiency, the city built three bridges in one year.
